Welcome to The Atlantic City Line Web Portal
NJ TRANSIT is embarking on an aggressive program to purchase new rail equipment that will enhance the fleet currently in service. The plan calls for the largest rail equipment purchase in NJ TRANSIT’s history during the next five years: 200 single-level rail cars and 33 diesel locomotives by 2002; and 24 electric locomotives by 2003. Plans are also being developed for the purchase of 200 bi-level rail cars by 2004. New Cars, More Seats The new single-level Comet V cars will be equipped with automated public address systems, information displays and the latest safety standards. But the biggest news is the purchase of bi-level rail cars and electric locomotives. The bi-level cars will be specially designed to meet NJ TRANSIT’s operational standards and the specifications that are required to pass through the tunnels under the Hudson River, connecting New Jersey with New York. The cars will accommodate access from both high-level and low-level platforms, ease customer boarding and exiting, and minimize dwell times at stations. The new locomotives will be designed with increased power to accommodate longer train lengths and bi-level cars. Our present ALP-44 electric locomotives are limited to up to nine single-level cars or five bi-level cars. The new locomotives will accommodate up to 12 single-level cars or 10 bi-level cars. In addition to new equipment purchases, we are currently upgrading 116 Comet II cars. The older Comet I cars will remain in service until the Comet II cars are rehabilitated. Overall, approximately 29,620 more seats will be added after all the new equipment is purchased.
